Indian Railways in the past have been taking various measures <strong><em>to go solar<\/em><\/strong> and railways of many zones have already adopted solar power on a large scale.\u00a0<strong>Guwahati<\/strong> is ranking high on Google search results \u2013 no not for a vacation\/ holiday, but for becoming the first North Eastern railway station to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenworldinvestor.com\/2018\/05\/16\/an-indian-railway-station-runs-100-on-solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">run 100% on solar power<\/a><\/strong>. Now, the <strong>Eastern Railway<\/strong> has also set an ambitious plan to generate 30 MW of solar power by 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Eastern Railways has already\u00a0commissioned 5.5MW rooftop solar plants and\u00a0is on track to increase the capacity by another 24.5MW by 2020. Note, Howrah railway station in Kolkata is one of the busiest stations in the country and has the\u00a0largest solar capacity commissioned over a single station in Indian Railways. Further, on its ec0-friendly approach, the Indian Railways has banned plastic usage,\u00a0installed bio-toilets in train coaches, etc. The Indian Railways is aiming to\u00a0source about <em>10% of electrical energy from renewable energy sources<\/em>. It has plans\u00a0to install 1000 MW solar power by 2020-2021. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenworldinvestor.com\/2017\/06\/27\/flexible-solar-panels-to-provide-light-and-power-on-your-next-train-ride\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Flexible solar panels<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are also being used on trains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenworldinvestor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/solar-train.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19595\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenworldinvestor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/solar-train.gif\" alt=\"solar-train\" width=\"197\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Indian Railways has banned\u00a0<strong>single-use plastic material<\/strong>, with less than 50-micron thickness and is instead using terracotta-made \u2018kulhads\u2019 at stations. Plastic bottle crushing machines have also been installed at various stations. The <strong><em>Indian Railways is aiming at full-electrification<\/em><\/strong> and the Modi government has already electrified a total of 5,200 km of railway lines last year. This number increased to\u00a037,237 route kilometers of rail lines, which is ~58% of total\u00a0Indian Railways\u2019\u00a0network, as of November.\u00a0 Piyush Goyal also said that the Indian Railways will be 100% electrically run by 2023. This entails\u00a0reducing the number of trains running on diesel and to use\u00a0electric locomotives network in the future.\u00a0Several steps have been taken to expedite the electrification of railway lines in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Railways is a highly power-oriented enterprise, having high energy requirements.
