China is top of the list:<\/strong> After a big push to build turbines \u2013 at one point it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-37409069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building two an hour<\/a> \u2013 China leads the way when it comes to wind power, with about a third of the entire global capacity. The United States has the second highest capacity for wind power, Germany is third, India fourth and Spain fifth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>9.\u00a0Denmark produces a big proportion of energy from wind:<\/strong> While China might be the biggest producer, Denmark is able to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/denmark-got-42-of-its-electricity-from-wind-last-year-smashing-the-world-record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 40% of its energy<\/a> from wind. On particularly windy days, it is even able to produce 140% of the nation\u2019s electricity needs from wind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>8.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>A lot goes into a wind turbine:<\/strong> There are about 8,000 different components making up the structures that you see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>7.\u00a0They can spin very quickly.<\/strong> While speeds vary depending on the size and weather conditions, at full speed the tips can spin at an estimated 180 mph.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6.\u00a0Turbines need to be weather-proofed:<\/strong> Given that they\u2019re out in all weathers, the surface of a wind turbine needs to be prepared for everything Mother Nature throws at it. The surface needs to be properly prepared \u2013 perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airblastafc.com\/fan-blast-blasting-nozzle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using blasting equipment<\/a> \u2013 so that the coating will withstand the great outdoors. With proper construction, a turbine can last for up to 25 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenworldinvestor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/images5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4907\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenworldinvestor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/images5.jpg\" alt=\"Wind Energy\" width=\"276\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iiec-india.org\/greenworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/images5.jpg 276w, https:\/\/iiec-india.org\/greenworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/images5-114x75.jpg 114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width:767px) 276px, 276px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5. Turbines are getting bigger:<\/strong> Earlier this year the world\u2019s biggest turbine was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-4342966\/Wind-turbine-world-s-biggest-722-feet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled in Denmark<\/a>. It is 722ft (or 220m) tall, with propellers that measure 263ft (or 80m). That\u2019s about half the height of the Empire State Building (to its tip).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4. Turbines don\u2019t come cheap.<\/strong> While costs vary, it\u2019s thought that a utility-scale turbine can cost between $1.3 million to $2.2 million per MW of capacity installed.\u00a0Typically, commercial turbines can cost about $4 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3.\u00a0The average onshore turbine can potentially power 1,500 homes:<\/strong> Turbines with a capacity of 2.5\u20133 MW can produce more than 6 million kWh in a year. Offshore turbines can often produce twice the amount of electricity each year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>We could get a third of our energy from wind by 2050:<\/strong> Global wind power generation quadrupled between 2000 and 2006 alone. If growth levels keep up, then the wind will account for a third of global energy demands by the middle of the century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.\u00a0There\u2019s big investment in wind energy:<\/strong> Denmark\u2019s Dong Energy is in the midst of building the world\u2019s largest offshore wind farm.
