{"id":1697,"date":"2010-08-25T00:44:26","date_gmt":"2010-08-24T19:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/?p=1697"},"modified":"2010-08-25T00:44:26","modified_gmt":"2010-08-24T19:14:26","slug":"why-is-japanese-technology-giant-toshiba-entering-the-solar-epc-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iiec-india.org\/greenworld\/2010\/08\/25\/why-is-japanese-technology-giant-toshiba-entering-the-solar-epc-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is Japanese Technology Giant Toshiba entering the Solar EPC business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Toshiba Follows Global Conglomerates making a Beeline into Solar Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Toshiba the Japanese Giant known for its <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/06\/18\/nuclear-energy-investing-toshiba-plans-major-investment-to-catch-upto-areva-even-as-indianchinese-markets-see-setbacks\/\">Global Leadership in Nuclear Power Equipment<\/a>,Electronics and Memory Businesses has decided to become a big player in\u00a0 the Solar EPC business.While <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/07\/03\/itochu-and-toshiba-increase-their-green-investments-through-multiple-joint-ventures\/\">Toshiba has decided to increase Green Investments<\/a> strongly with a JV already concluded for Batteries with Mitsubishi,the EPC venture certainly comes as a surprise.This strategy is quite different from the other global conglomerates entering the Solar Energy Field.South Korean Players like <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/08\/03\/south-korean-conglomerate-hanwha-follows-lgsamsunghyundai-into-solar-energyacquires-controlling-49-99-stake-in-4th-largest-chinese-solar-company-solarfun-at-a-cheap-price\/\">Samsung,LG,Hanwha<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/07\/14\/green-investing-in-south-korea-hyundai-plans-to-double-solar-capacity-by-2011\/\">Hyundai <\/a>are all building Crystalline Silicon Modules.General Electric is focusing on the Thin Film Production while Siemens is targeting Concentrated Solar Thermal (CSP) manufacturing.Taiwanese companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/07\/29\/tsmc-decides-to-focus-on-solar-cigs-technology-instead-of-mainstream-c-si\/\">TSMC <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/08\/04\/auos-gigawatt-solar-ambitions-hit-an-environmental-bump-over-manufacturing-in-taiwan\/\">AUO <\/a>are also planning on producing modules rather than building solar power plants.Japanese companies lie Kyocera,Sharp,Mitsubishi and Panasonic are already well established in the production of Solar Modules with <a href=\"http:\/\/greenworldinvestor.com\/2010\/08\/03\/sharp-becomes-an-independent-power-producer-ipp-through-jv-with-enel-to-build-utility-scale-solar-plants\/\">Sharp <\/a>being the largest solar company in terms of revenues.Toshiba&#8217;s EPC Strategy therefore seems quite different from the other companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toshiba Planning a big foray into the Solar EPC Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note the Solar EPC business typically is a low margin business like the general Enginereering Procurement and Contract (EPC) Sector.A number of Solar Companies like Q-Cells,MEMC,Sunpower and First Solar in recent times have entered this segment to generate a captive demand for their solar products.Nobody derives significant profits from this part of the supply chain due to its lower margin structure.With low barriers of entry and little bargaining power,this part of the Solar Food Chain is the last place you would expect a high technology company like Toshiba to enter.The Nikkei report says that Toshiba wants to enter the Smart Grid business by leveraging its experiece of the Solar EPC business.It is already in the process of building a 10 MW plant in Bulgaria and plans to generate around\u00a0 $2 Billion Dollars annually from US and Europe by 2015.I can&#8217;t fathom the reasons behind Toshiba&#8217;s entry except that Toshiba finding the other parts of the Solar Supply Chain too crowded decided to enter the EPC Business.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE67N4U220100824?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FUSgreenbusinessNews+%28News+%2F+US+%2F+Green+Business%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">Toshiba plans solar power push in U.S. and Europe: Nikkei &#8211;
